The UFC heads to Perth this weekend for UFC Fight Night: Della Maddalena vs Prates, taking place this Saturday, May 2nd, at RAC Arena. Headlining the card is a welterweight matchup between former champion Jack Della Maddalena (#1) and Carlos Prates (#5), with Della Maddalena trying to reset after losing the belt to Islam Makhachev and Prates looking to force his way into the title picture after back-to-back knockout wins over Geoff Neal and Leon Edwards.
Della Maddalena comes into this one off the first loss of his UFC run, a five-round title defeat to Islam Makhachev in which he never fully found the space to build his boxing. That makes this homecoming less of a celebration and more of a test of how quickly he can reassert himself in a division that has already started moving around him. Prates, meanwhile, has quickly turned himself into one of the most disruptive contenders at 170, with knockouts of Geoff Neal and Leon Edwards pushing him from dangerous prospect to real contender. His length, timing, and ability to punish opponents at range make this a very different kind of problem for Della Maddalena, who will need to pressure without overextending and steer the fight back into the layered boxing exchanges where he does his best work.
